Following a statement last week from the Cabinet Secretary for Housing & Local Government Jayne Bryant MS on the Welsh Government’s “Transforming Towns” programme, James Evans MS has called for genuine engagement with local communities before changes are implemented.
James welcomes the investment into town centres like Brecon and Crickhowell but warned that recent experiences have shown a worrying disregard for local voices. A consultation on changes to Free Street in Brecon was overwhelmingly opposed by residents, yet the Lib Dem/Labour-run council moved forward with the plans regardless.
James Evans MS said:
“Through the transforming towns initiative, towns like Brecon and Crickhowell could be revitalised but only if local voices are heard in the design and implementation of such projects. Ultimately it is local people that know best, not consultants. Efforts to improve the street scene, pedestrian experience, and improved public spaces will only work if local businesses are supported and our High Street has shops that are thriving and viable. I would urge the Lib Dem/Labour run council to also look at lowering car parking charges to attract more footfall in our town centres.
“The Lib Dem/Labour run Powys County Council has recently closed a consultation exercise to get feedback on their plans and proposals, and they are now considering the views submitted.
“I am concerned that a recent consultation exercise on changing Free Street in Brecon was overwhelmingly opposed by local residents, yet the Lib Dem/Labour-run council pushed ahead regardless of their concerns. The same cannot happen with the Transforming Towns agenda. The residents in each area and the businesses that operate in the town centres are key to its success. Without their support, the transformation will not be effective.
“Let’s be clear, our Town centres are struggling in part because of Labour’s policies. They should start by lowering business rates which are higher here in Wales than England. National Insurance increases from the UK Labour Government have added to the strain on businesses. Only the Welsh Conservatives have a plan to support businesses and rejuvenate our town centres.”
